CSCS is able to provide virtual servers hosted within a VMWare environment. These servers can be provided either as a managed server (where CSCS takes care of the day to day running of the server operating system) or unmanaged where researchers can administer the server for themselves.
The primary benefits of choosing a virtual server are the ease with which the hardware configuration can be adjusted and also the high level of resiliency provided by hosting a virtual system on a farm of host servers. In this environment in most cases, a hardware failure on the hosting server results in no more than a brief interruption to the virtual server while it is relocated to an operational host. Planned downtimes of the hosting hardware typically can be performed with no downtime of the hosted virtual servers at all.
Virtual servers are suitable for a variety of requirements, including (but not limited to) web servers, database servers and application servers. If you are unsure about a virtual servers suitability for you then contact CSCS and we can talk through your requirements with you.
