The University and CSCS are under constant attack by external agencies – spam, firewall attacks, viruses. We often receive inquiries regarding how to tell if a home computer is infected and what to do if there is an infection.
CSCS users are able to download and install Sophos on home computers. See this page for more information about getting Sophos Home Premium.
The University also provides McAfee licences for home computers.
If you are concerned about the possibility of a virus on your home computer try the following. No solution is 100% effective, but it is a good starting point.
- Try installing a virus removal tool like this one from Sophos or Malware Bytes.
- Install or replace your anti virus program with Sophos. Note – do not have multiple anti virus programs installed on your computer. It can cause conflicts or decrease effectiveness of scanning.
- Run a full system scan
- If you still believe that there is a virus, you should consider getting professional help. There are many companies and contractors in the area who offer virus removal services.
